Why Skill Sprints beat “more learning”
We think learning is input: read more pages, complete more modules, watch another video. But the forgetting curve is rude—after about 1 day, we may lose 50–70% of details if we do nothing with them. By 3 p.m., the decision is recorded. We close the week with a sense of coherence. The highlight is not the amount we learned but the amount we applied.
We did not need perfection or heroics. We needed small decisions under a timer and a place to keep score.
Check‑in Block
Daily (3 Qs):
- Did we ship one artifact that applied a specific technique we learned? (yes/no)
- What was the single most noticeable sensation during the Sprint? (calm, tension, curiosity, frustration)
- Metric result: enter the number (e.g., minutes, count, % within tolerance)
Weekly (3 Qs):
- How many Sprints did we complete? (target 3–5)
- What percentage met the defined metric? (target ≥60%)
- Which friction showed up most? (definitions, environment, stakeholder, scope)
Metrics to log:
- Count: Sprints shipped per week.
- Minutes: time saved or runtime achieved per Sprint (e.g., 1.4 minutes load time). Optional: Accuracy within ±X%.
Closing the loop: identity through action
We learn from patterns in daily life, prototype mini‑apps to improve specific areas, and teach what works. The Skill Sprint is a quiet engine that turns us from passive learners into practitioners whose days leave trails. Each artifact is a vote for the person we are becoming.
