A negotiation email becomes a saved draft. We keep them in a folder named by week, each with a date prefix and short name. We paste the most useful artifact into Brali with a tag “reusable.”
We also maintain a “Stable heuristics” note. When an Evaluate rule survives three uses, we promote it. Examples:
- “Filter rows with WHERE; filter groups with HAVING.”
- “If information asymmetry is high, ask before anchoring.”
- “If two models score within 10% on accuracy, prefer the simpler one.” Each heuristic reduces future decision costs by seconds or minutes. Ten heuristics can save us hours across a month.
When to level up complexity
A hidden risk is staying at comfortable difficulty, especially at Apply and Create. We add a simple gate:
- If Apply success > 80% for three sessions, increase complexity by 20–30% (harder problems, larger dataset, stricter criteria).
- If Create feels formulaic twice in a row, add a constraint (time limit, size limit, stakeholder requirement).
We quantify change rather than guess. For example, if we solved 3 of 3 SQL problems twice in a row, we shift to joins across three tables or window functions next session. If our speech openings feel samey, we set a constraint like “no question-opening; must use contrast within 15 seconds.”
Cognitive load and working memory
A practical reason the ladder works: it manages cognitive load. Remember and Understand reduce intrinsic load by chunking facts. Apply leverages worked examples to lower extraneous load. Analyze/Evaluate create schemas that compress decisions. Create tests transfer, reorganizing knowledge into a usable form.
We can even feel it in our body. Recall drills feel light but a bit rote; Apply feels effortful; Analyze/Evaluate make us stare into space; Create feels both scary and satisfying. If we push all six for too long, we’ll fry circuits. Hence the time caps and the weekly integration pattern.
How to use the ladder inside a longer project
If we’re in a month-long project—say, building a small analytics dashboard—we can still use daily ladders. We scope each day’s ladder to a single sub-skill needed for the project (e.g., window functions for running totals). We Create something that plugs directly into the project (a working SQL query that drives a chart). We log Evaluate decisions so we can explain trade-offs later.
We keep project notes in a separate file; the ladder pushes micro-progress inside that file. At the end of the week, we run a 30-minute “Evaluate retrospective”: which heuristics stuck, which ones failed, what will we try next. We ruthlessly archive dead ends but keep the decisions so we can avoid repeating them.
The emotional texture of a good ladder day
A small acknowledgement: learning generates emotion. Relief when a concept clicks. Frustration when a query won’t run. Curiosity when an analogy unlocks a knot. We can normalize this: the ladder dial shifts our state. We give ourselves small moments to exhale—at the end of Apply, we note one thing that annoyed us. At the end of Create, we note one thing that surprised us. This makes the process feel human and sustainable.
We assumed “emotion distracts” → observed “naming the feeling in one word reduced rumination” → changed to “add a one-word emotion tag to the daily check-in.”
Putting it together: Run today’s session
We choose a sub-skill now. We write one sentence: “Tomorrow will be easier if I can X.” We open Brali LifeOS to the Bloom planner. We hit Start. We let the timer move us. If we get stuck, we shrink, not stretch. We end by shipping something and logging in 60 seconds:
- Tally minutes per level
- Count: attempts, contrasts, shipped artifacts
- One rule-of-thumb or a note to tomorrow-self
If we do this three days in a row, the habit will click. If we do it for two weeks, we’ll have a small set of artifacts and heuristics that make our work tangibly easier.
Check‑in Block
Daily (3 Qs):
- Which highest level did I genuinely reach today? (Remember / Understand / Apply / Analyze / Evaluate / Create)
- What did I ship or attempt? (name it in 5–10 words)
- What was the stickiest moment, and what micro‑move did I use? (shrink task, switch example, add criterion)
Weekly (3 Qs):
- On how many days did I reach Create? (0–7)
- Which rule‑of‑thumb did I promote to “stable,” and why?
- Where did error rates drop the most? (level + brief note)
Metrics:
- Minutes practiced (total; optional per level)
- Count of Apply attempts and shipped Create artifacts
Troubleshooting quick hits
- If sessions keep overrunning: shave 1–2 minutes from Analyze and Evaluate, keep Create intact.
- If boredom spikes: increase Analyze by adding a compare/contrast with a neighbor topic; or switch to a time-bound “challenge” Create.
- If we dread starting: move Remember/Understand into a 5-minute morning micro-slot; save Apply/Create for later.
- If feedback loops are slow: design micro-tests (e.g., unit tests for code, 3-question self-quiz, audience rating form).
We avoid the trap of “just more hours.” We design sharper hours.
Sample Day Tally (generic template to copy)
- Remember: 6–10 minutes; 6–10 facts or patterns captured
- Understand: 8–10 minutes; 120–160 words, 1 sketch
- Apply: 10–15 minutes; 2–3 attempts, success rate %
- Analyze: 8–10 minutes; 3 contrasts
- Evaluate: 6–8 minutes; 1 rule-of-thumb with criterion
- Create: 8–12 minutes; 1 tiny artifact shipped Total: 50–65 minutes; Shipped: yes/no; Attempts: count
This tally is short enough to be used daily without friction.
One last pivot we learned the hard way
We assumed “writing longer reflections builds insight” → observed “reflections over 6 sentences cut future adherence by 20–30%” → changed to “3-sentence debrief + 1 rule-of-thumb.” Clarity improved; consistency improved more. Insight emerged from artifacts and heuristics, not from long prose.
