A couple debates moving from city A to city B. They gather crime stats, school rankings, commute maps, tax tables, home price projections, and weather history back to 1950. They can’t decide. How to Recognize and Avoid Information Bias

Information bias wears nice clothes. It calls itself diligence, thoroughness, prudence, craftsmanship. We don’t want to kill those habits. We want to temper them with one question:

Would this new information change what I do next?

Start With the Decision, Not the Data

Before you gather anything, write down the decision in one clear sentence. Then write the options you’re willing to consider and the conditions under which each one wins. If you can’t do this, you’re not making a decision, you’re wandering.

  • Decision: “Buy an espresso machine under $800 for milk drinks at home this month.”
  • Options: “Machine A, Machine B, or wait.”
  • Win conditions: “If reliability differs by more than 10% or milk steaming is substantially better, pick the winner; otherwise, choose the cheaper one this week.”

Now you have a stop rule. Research ends when you’ve checked the win conditions. Everything else is curiosity, not decision fuel.

Precommit to Thresholds

Set thresholds that determine which way you’ll go. If you’re debating two tools, maybe you precommit like this:

  • If support response time differs by >24 hours on average, choose faster support.
  • If integration time differs by >2 days given our stack, choose the quicker integration.
  • If cost differs by >15% and features are comparable, choose cheaper.

Thresholds transform vague feelings into tests. They also make it easier to ignore data that doesn’t hit the bar.

Decide how much time the decision deserves—then protect it. Timeboxes force prioritization and reduce the “one more article” spiral.

  • Reversible, low-cost: 30–90 minutes.
  • Reversible, moderate cost: half a day.
  • Irreversible or high-cost: allocate proportionally more, but still cap the effort and identify “must-have” vs. “nice-to-know” questions.

A useful trick: write a calendar invite titled “Decision due: [topic].” If you blow past it, you must justify the extension to someone else.

Some data is decisive. Some is noise. A small number with high diagnostic value beats a pile of mush.

In medicine, diagnosticity shows up in likelihood ratios. A test that doubles the odds of disease (LR+ ~2) tells you something. A test that barely nudges the odds (LR+ ~1.1) doesn’t justify the cost. You can borrow that logic elsewhere:

Distinguish Reversible From Irreversible

Techniques That Punch Above Their Weight

You don’t need a stats degree. You need a few habits that change the slope of your day.

The Two-Column Test: Evidence vs. Comfort

Divide a page into two columns:

  • Evidence I’m missing that could change the decision.
  • Information I want because it makes me feel safer.

Be blunt. If the right column fills up faster, you’re not deciding. Choose.

Expected Value of Information (Without the Math Headache)

You can eyeball whether information is worth it. Ask:

  • How likely is it that new data will flip my decision? (gut estimate)
