That reflex to yank your hand away after a burn is ancient and useful. But it also tricks us into avoiding options that would pay off if we gave them a fair second or third try.

This can show up anywhere decisions involve uncertainty and learning: hiring, dating, investing, product launches, health choices, and daily habits. It matters because the world is noisy. Good choices often come with variance. If your sampling stops after one shock, you underestimate anything with ups and downs.

Psychology and decision science have a few cousins to this. The “hot-stove effect” describes how we learn to avoid options after pain, even when those options are beneficial on average (Denrell, 2007). Loss aversion makes the pain of a loss hit 2–3x harder than the joy of a gain (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). Negativity bias makes bad events stickier in memory than good ones (Baumeister et al., 2001). A patient took a statin, got muscle aches in week one, and stopped. He never tried a different statin, dose, or schedule. Two years later his lipid levels were worse. Some side effects subside; some meds have alternatives with similar benefits. One trial doesn’t equal the truth.

What happened: survival brain + salience. The immediate pain overshadowed long-term benefit. A well-informed retry could have regained the upside.

The friend who won’t host dinner

She cooked once, the roast was underdone, and her guests teased her. She stopped inviting people for dinner for three years. She lost the joy and community that come from messy, normal meals.

What happened: social loss aversion. She protected herself from future embarrassment and locked herself out of a meaningful practice.

Software library that “bit us once”

A team adopted a new queue library. It crashed under load during a promotion. The team rolled back and swore off the library forever. Later they discovered the crash came from a misconfigured environment variable. The library was solid; their setup wasn’t.

What happened: attribution error. They blamed the tool and avoided it, losing out on features and support that would have helped.

The gym program that “wrecked my back”

A beginner tried deadlifts with poor form, tweaked their back, and swore off compound lifts. They plateaued for a year. When a coach cleaned up their technique, their strength and mood improved.

What happened: a painful sample pushed them away from the very thing that would have helped, if done correctly and progressively.

The investor who swore off “anything biotech”

Bought a small-cap biotech, got slammed by a trial failure, and declared “biotech is a casino.” They avoided an ETF that diversified across dozens of names and captured the sector’s rebound.

What happened: generalizing from a single, risky instance to an entire domain without adjusting the strategy (diversify, size bets, focus on approval-stage pipelines).

The parent and the broccoli

A kid tried broccoli once, steamed and unseasoned. Hated it. The parent stopped offering broccoli. Years pass. The kid later tries roasted broccoli with garlic and lemon and loves it.

What happened: one prep method equals “broccoli” in the child’s model of the world. Variance in technique gets collapsed into “bad.”

If you find yourself nodding at one of these, it’s because the pattern is human, not a personal flaw. Our brain updates fast after pain. That kept us alive on the savannah. It costs us upside in a noisy, modern world.

How to Recognize and Avoid Non-Adaptive Choice Switching

You can catch this pattern early if you know what to look for. Practically, you need two moves:

1) Notice the “hot-stove” impulse. 2) Add structure so good options get a fair test.

Here’s how.

Smells like hot metal: recognition cues

  • You feel a sharp “never again” urge after one bad experience.
  • You retell the story of that one failure more than you revisit the data.
  • You’ve never defined what “good enough” would look like for the option.
  • You can’t name two alternative explanations for the failure.
  • You made a global rule (“no TikTok,” “no therapists,” “no deadlifts”) from a single local event.

If two or more hit, pause. You’re probably switching too fast.

Add guardrails before you try

It’s easier to avoid this bias if you set rules when you’re calm.

  • Precommit to a sample size. Decide, “We’ll run three creative iterations for two weeks before judging the channel,” or “I’ll try two different therapists over four sessions each.”
  • Define pass/fail metrics up front. “We’ll keep the channel if blended CAC < $80 by day 21,” or “I’ll keep the medication if side effects drop to mild by week two.”
