Six months later, the app had almost no active users. Postmortem interviews found the obvious, but only in hindsight: their users didn’t forget pills; they feared side effects, resented the stigma of taking meds at work, and needed quiet support from family. The team built for a scheduling problem. Users lived a social and emotional reality. The relevant knowledge sat next door—in psychology, sociology, and habit design—and no one reached for it.
That blindfold has a name: Domain Neglect Bias. It’s when you ignore useful knowledge from other fields that could change your decisions or outcomes.
We’re the MetalHatsCats Team. We’re building a Cognitive Biases app because these blind spots break products, policies, and relationships more than bugs or budgets ever do.
What is Domain Neglect Bias and why it matters
Domain Neglect Bias shows up when we stay inside the comfort fence of our own expertise. We treat a problem like a pure software thing, or a pure legal thing, or a pure marketing thing—when the problem is really a hybrid. We favor the tools we know. We filter out the tools we don’t know how to use.
Why it happens:
- We love speed. Using the mental models we already trust feels fast and safe (Kahneman, 2011).
- Our teams are built in silos. Job ladders, OKRs, and calendar invites reinforce separation.
- Language walls. Every field has jargon; translation is work.
- Social tax. Asking “obvious” questions across domains feels risky. So we don’t.
- Incentives. We get rewarded for local wins, not for cross-field learning that prevents distant losses.
Why it matters:
- You ship the right thing to the wrong problem. Great execution, wrong diagnosis.
- You re-learn expensive lessons others already solved.
- You create invisible risks. Compliance, safety, and ethics rarely sit in one domain.
- You waste insight. Adjacent fields are libraries you never opened.
The kicker: most meaningful problems today span domains—climate and finance, AI and law, health and behavior, security and culture. If you want leverage, cross-pollination isn’t “nice to have.” It’s the main event. Forecasters who pull from diverse domains beat experts who stay narrow (Tetlock & Gardner, 2015).

1) The A/B test that cost a quarter
A marketplace team saw a 4% drop in conversion after a redesign. They ran A/B tests for two months. Nothing moved. Designers kept tweaking layout and copy. Engineers optimized API calls. Growth wrote new subject lines.
A junior analyst asked to segment by day. The drop happened on Mondays and only for French users. Why? Because the tax field required a new code for a recent EU ruling, and French merchants had different inputs. Legal told finance. Growth never heard. The root issue was regulation, not UX. How to recognize and avoid it
You can’t read every field. You can build habits that catch Domain Neglect Bias before it costs you six figures and a reputation.
Map the boundary of your problem
Write the problem as it lives in the world, not in your tool. “Reduce missed oncology appointments for patients traveling over 20 miles,” not “Increase notification click-through.” The first phrasing invites transport, social work, scheduling, and equity. The second locks you into UX and metrics.
Now list nearby domains that touch the boundary: law, finance, behavior, culture, operations, safety, supply, data provenance, labor, environment. If you feel silly writing “insects,” and your product touches agriculture, you’re finally doing it right.
Run a pre-mortem across disciplines
Before you commit, ask, “It’s a year from now and our project failed. What happened?” Invite one person from each relevant domain to write reasons. You’ll get surprises. A procurement manager will flag a lead-time risk. A community organizer will flag legitimacy. A privacy engineer will flag consent flows that don’t exist in your market. Pre-mortems surface cheap fixes (Klein, 1998).
Create a translation layer
Every field has its own nouns, verbs, and taboos. Appoint a translator. It can be a person or a shared document. Make a simple glossary. Write how you’ll make decisions, who owns what, and what “done” means for each domain. For example: “Data retention means X in legal, Y in product, Z in analytics. Here’s the overlap we need.”
Pair domain tours
Do 30-minute micro-tours. The security lead walks the team through a recent incident. The clinician shows how nurses really chart at 3 a.m. The finance analyst explains how cash actually clears. The purpose is not to become an expert. It’s to ask better questions and spot where you’re blind.
Use boundary objects
Build artifacts that everyone can point at: journey maps, service blueprints, physical mockups, flow diagrams. A nurse, a lawyer, and an engineer can look at the same patient flow and discuss friction. Without a shared object, they debate abstractions.
Build small external advisory loops
Create a lightweight advisory bench. Two to five people from adjacent fields you can text a one-pager. They don’t need to be famous. They need to be honest and unafraid to say, “You’re missing X.” Pay them if you can. Respect time.
Run a two-field rule
For any decision that matters, pull one concept from at least two outside fields. Launching a new checkout flow? Pair a pricing concept (reference points) with an operations concept (bottleneck management). Writing a trust policy? Borrow from law (notice and consent) and sociology (legitimacy and norms).
Do evidence scavenger hunts
Assign someone to find three relevant studies or cases from other fields. Summarize in one paragraph each. No jargon. For example, if you’re designing habit loops, summarize one behavioral study, one marketing case, one clinical trial. You’re not building a PhD. You’re grabbing clues.
Incentivize cross-pollination
Put cross-field wins into performance reviews. Celebrate the engineer who spotted a regulatory change that saved rework. Celebrate the policy analyst who flagged a failure mode in onboarding. Reward it, and it will happen.
Make dissent cheap
Invite a rotating “red team” to poke holes. Give them a script and airtime. Divergent viewpoints improve creativity and accuracy (Nemeth, 2003). Your red team can be two colleagues and a user. Make it safe to be the person who says, “Are we sure this isn’t a procurement problem?”

Related or confusable ideas
Domain Neglect Bias overlaps with other traps. They feel similar, but they’re different in useful ways.
- Silo mentality: Organizational structure that blocks information flow. Domain neglect can happen even on small teams with no formal silos. It’s a mindset plus a habit.
- Not-Invented-Here syndrome: Preferring internal solutions over external ones. Domain neglect may value external ideas within the same field while ignoring nearby fields entirely.
- Functional fixedness: Seeing objects only in their usual function. Domain neglect extends that to fields: seeing statistics as “for analysts” instead of a general thinking tool.
- Confirmation bias: Seeking evidence that supports your view. Domain neglect often reduces the sources you consult, which makes confirmation bias worse.
- Overconfidence / Dunning–Kruger: Overestimating your competence. Domain neglect adds a twist: you underestimate the relevance of other people’s competence.
- Availability bias: Using what’s top of mind. Domain neglect makes certain fields never enter your mind; they aren’t “available” in your mental menu.
- Expertise blind spot: Experts forget what novices don’t know. Domain neglect sometimes flips it: experts forget that their expertise is only one slice of a puzzle.
Knowing the difference helps you diagnose. If the problem is structure, fix the org. If it’s mindset, fix habits. If it’s incentives, fix rewards.
How to recognize you’re drifting into it
You won’t see Domain Neglect Bias in the mirror. Watch for these tells:
- Your team debates layout for hours and nobody asks, “What changed in policy, seasonality, or incentives?”
- You measure more, but your metric refuses to budge. You keep tweaking the same knob.
- You use more jargon than plain language in updates. People stop asking questions.
- The only “users” you talk to look like past users. New segments are invisible.
- Every fix is a sprint ticket. None change the context outside your app or org.
- You hear “that’s not our job” more than “who can we ask?”
- Postmortems repeat the same themes: “assumptions,” “communication,” “unknown unknowns.”
If you see two or more in a week, pause. Call someone outside your lane.

We like small habits you can do today. None require a reorg.
- A 15-minute weekly cross-domain standup. One person from each adjacent area shares one emerging risk and one observation. Keep notes.

You’re fixing missed appointments. Build a simple journey map from “book” to “arrive.” Include steps outside your app: getting time off, arranging childcare, transit time, parking, signage. Invite a scheduler, a nurse, a social worker, and a patient. Ask where the journey breaks on a bad day. Most fixes won’t be code. You might add SMS bus alerts. You might add a script for schedulers to ask about childcare needs. You might adjust clinic hours.
The cheap real-world test
You want to increase recycling at an office. Don’t write a deck. Put labeled bins in three spots for two weeks. Measure contamination daily. Vary labels and distance. Borrow from behavioral science: put the desired action in the path of least resistance. You’re a designer? Great. You’re also doing a tiny field experiment.
The “who gets hurt if we succeed” question
Your fraud team wants to tighten filters. Ask who gets hurt if you succeed. You’ll find legitimate users who share IPs in dorms or family plans. Consult a sociologist or community manager to avoid punishing the wrong people. Adjust thresholds and add an appeals path. Your blocked-fraud metric drops. Your net revenue rises.
